Bond vs stock index funds

Stocks vs. Bonds. Stocks and bonds are the two main classes of assets investors use in their portfolios. Stocks offer an ownership stake in a company, while bonds are akin to loans made to a company (a corporate bond) or other organization (like the U.S. Treasury). In general, stocks are considered riskier and more volatile than bonds. When you buy an index fund, you are buying a basket of stocks designed to track a certain index, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500. In effect, investors who buy shares of an index fund own shares of stock in dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of different companies indirectly.
